In the footsteps of the reformer Martin Luther
Day 1 - Eisenach:
Arrival at the hotel, where you will stay for two nights.
In the afternoon you will get a first impression of the Luther town Eisenach by a short walk through the city. Visit to Luther’s House in Eisenach, which predominantly houses evidence from Luther’s life. In the Church of St. George on Market Square, Luther sang as a choirboy when he was a student, went to services and preached in 1521 on his way to the Imperial Diet in Worms.
Day 2 - Eisenach:
In the morning ascent to Wartburg Castle with Luther’s chambers. The Wartburg is one of the best preserved medieval castles and served Luther as an asylum. It was here that he translated the New Testament. In the afternoon journey over Bad Langensalza (“Augustiner”monastery) to Mühlhausen. Short walk through the city with city hall, Church St. Marien and Divi Blasii. Way back to Eisenach over Gotha.
Overnight stay in Eisenach.
Day 3 - Eisenach – Erfurt:
After breakfast journey to Erfurt.
Guided walk through the once so powerful city. In Luther’s days there were 55 churches and 11 monasteries. You will visit Erfurt Cathedral (Mariendom). Luther was ordained a priest in the choir of the cathedral. Walk past the Fish Market and the famous Kraemerbruecke bridge to the Augustinian monastery, where Luther lived as a monk.
Overnight stay in Erfurt.
Day 4 - Erfurt – Eisleben – Halle - Leipzig
After breakfast journey to Eisleben.
Guided walk including a visit to Luther’s Birth and Death House, as well as the Church of St. Peter and St. Paul, where Luther was baptized, and St. Andrew’s Church. In the latter church Luther preached his last sermon and it was here that his body was put to lie in state. Continue to Halle. Short city walk in Halle where you will visit the church of St. Marien. Continue to Leipzig. Overnight stay in Leipzig.
Day 5 -Torgau and Wittenberg:
Visit the chapel in Torgau’s Hartenfels Castle, which was consecrated by Martin Luther, and the Church of St. Mary, where Luther’s wife, Katharina von Bora. is buried. Guided tour of Wittenberg including a visit to the Castle and City Church (Schlosskirche and Stadtkirche), as well as the Luther Hall. In the Castle Church (also All Saints’) you will see where Luther is buried and the door where Luther nailed the famous 95 theses that sparked off the Reformation. The Augustinian monastery houses the world’s most extensive collection on the history of the Reformation. Overnight stay in Leipzig.
Day 6 - Leipzig:
In the morning guided tour including the Church of St. Thomas, where Luther preached when he introduced the Reformation. And free time in the afternoon ! Overnight stay in Leipzig.
Day 7 - Leipzig
The days have passed in a twinkling. After breakfast you will say good-bye to Leipzig and set off towards home.
